STI testing and treatment
STIs are infections that are passed from one person to another during sex (oral, vaginal or anal) through the exchange of fluids - semen, vaginal fluids or blood. Some can also be passed on through skin-to-skin contact, e.g. rubbing genitals during sex. Using a condom for sex reduces the risk of picking up or passing on an STI. Lots of people will have an STI and not know it. This is because the symptoms for some STIs are not always obvious. These are some of the symptoms to look out for: - pain when peeing;
- blisters, sores or spots around the genitals or anus;
- irritation of the urethra (where the pee comes out);
- pain when having sex or in the lower abdomen;
- unusual discharge from the penis, vagina or anus;
- itching around the genitals or anus.
If you think you might have an STI, you can go along to one of the local sexual infection (GUM) clinics. These clinics are free and confidential, and will test and treat all STIs. If you think you have put yourself at risk of picking up an STI, you can also go to Palatine contraception and sexual health clinics, Brook or Fresh for a check up. Some local GPs are also trained to test for and treat STIs. Have a look at our map of clinics that test and treat STIs.
